What does the pumpkin mean for Halloween?
Contrary to what many people believe, although Halloween (celebrated on October 31) has a tradition marked by American culture, the celebration of this date has European origins but specifically Irish origin.
According to the customs of the time, sculpting faces in pumpkins and adding candles inside made it possible to light the path of their houses and thus drive away evil spirits.
What’s the name of the Halloween pumpkin?
You could say that the most popular name for the Halloween pumpkin is Stingy Jack, or Jack-o’-lantern, which in free translation means “Jack with the flashlight”. But who was Stingy Jack, anyway?
According to legend, Jack was an Irishman who loved to play tricks on people who crossed his path. One night, however, Jack found himself in the presence of the Devil, who came with the purpose of taking his soul to hell.
Very cunning Jack invited the devil for one last beer before he died. When he finished, drunk Jack asked if the Devil couldn’t turn into a silver coin so he could pay the bill. And so the devil did.
However, instead of paying, Jack put the coin in his pocket next to the crucifix, preventing the Devil from returning to his original form. The condition for his release was that the Devil would not return for the next ten years. And so the devil did.
After ten years, the Devil returned and Jack convinced him to climb a tree and when it was on top, Jack positioned several crucifixes around the plant barring the Devil from descending. For his release, the Devil promised he would never take Jack’s soul to hell.
Many years later, Jack passed away and his entrance was barred both in paradise, for leading a sinful life, and in hell since the Devil fulfilled his old promise, giving him only a lantern.
In these conditions, legend has it that around the 18th century, the Irish started assembling similar lanterns using potatoes and beets and left them in front of the house to drive away the spirit of Jack and others. When the tradition arrived in North America, the Irish immigrants began to do the same with the pumpkins.
